On May 13, 2025, Huawei and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), with the support of China Mobile Group Design Institute, China Telecom, China Unicom, and Alibaba Cloud, jointly released the White Paper on the Safety of Lithium-ion Battery Applications in Data Centres (referred to as the White Paper) at the Global Data Center Facility Summit 2025. According to Huawei data on RRU/BBU needs per site, the typical 5G site has power needs of over 11.5 kilowatts, up nearly 70% from a base station deploying a mix of 2G, 3G and 4G radios. 5G macro base stations may require several new, power-hungry components, including microwave or millimeter wave transceivers, field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), faster data converters, high-power/low-noise amplifiers and integrated MIMO antennas. The key contributions of this study are summarised as follows: (i) feasibility study of the solar power system to feed remote cellular base stations under various cases of daily solar radiation in South Korea; (ii) determination of the optimum criteria and the economic and technical feasibility of the solar power system using HOMER software; and (iii) economic comparison of the proposed solar power system vs. diesel generators.
