In Detail : FUNAFUTI, TUVALU — The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Tuvalu today commissioned 500 kilowatt on-grid solar rooftops in Funafuti and a 2 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS) that will provide clean and reliable electricity supply to the country’s capital and help achieve the government’s ambitious renewable energy targets. The project will consist of three components: (1) a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) power plant with a total installed capacity of 10 MW including an associated battery energy storage Ssation (BESS), (2) a number of off-grid PV and BESS units for rural health clinics, secondary schools and food manufacturing and storage facilities and (3) power grid reinforcement investments to improve security of supply, reduce technical losses and increase its renewable energy take-up capacity. The 50kW/100kWh Solar Energy Storage system is suitable not only for industrial and commercial applications requiring high grid continuity, but also for remote areas with insufficient grid coverage or unstable power supply, and can cover communication energy storage, grid frequency modulation energy storage, wind and solar micro-grid energy storage, large-scale industrial and commercial distributed energy storage, data center energy storage, and photovoltaic power generation business in the new energy field. Lithium iron phosphate batteries deliver transformative value for solar applications through 350–500°C thermal stability that eliminates fire risks in energy-dense environments, 10,000 deep-discharge cycles that outlast solar panels by 5+ years, and 60% lower lifetime costs than alternatives—enabling 90% self-consumption in residential systems and utility-scale LCOS below $0.08/kWh.
