Download the Press Release (PDF) Antwerp, April 3, 2024 – On the occasion of Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten's visit to TotalEnergies' Antwerp refinery battery storage project, the Company announced the development in Belgium of a second similar project. The new project will be developed on the site of TotalEnergies’ depot in Feluy.
Upon completion of the second 400MWh phase by the end of 2025, the entire installation will be providing clean, stable power for about 96,000 homes and helping stabilize Belgium’s power grid. Battery storage is one of the most vital, yet too often overlooked, pieces of the energy transition jigsaw,” said Moritz Rolf, Sungrow Europe Vice President.
Following earlier projects in Vilvoorde and Kallo, this will be ENGIE's third large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Belgium, marking another significant step forward in the country’s energy transition. Construction is scheduled to start in March 2026 and will be completed by September 2027.
The Drogenbos battery park will be ENGIE’s third large-scale battery energy storage system in Belgium, after Vilvoorde (200 MW/800 MWh) and Kallo (100 MW/400 MWh). Together, these projects will represent a total installed capacity of 380 MW and a total storage capacity of 1.5 GWh.
Start-up is expected at the end of 2025. These two projects, which represent a global investment of nearly €70 million, will bring TotalEnergies' storage capacity in Belgium to 50 MW / 150 MWh. These battery storage sites play a key role in the resilience of the electricity system, providing flexibility and helping solve grid congestion problems.
