It is to be noted that the performance degradation of solar energy systems is caused by only one reason. In recent years, many PV systems with extended lifespan comprised anti potential-induced degradation (PID) . Potential Induced Degradation was first discovered by Sun Power in SiO 2 (silicon dioxide) passivated modules in 2005.
During the recent surge in solar PV installations, the Nordic countries – Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark – have increasingly embraced solar PV technology, defying their northern geographical challenges.
However, in our Energy Transition Outlook we find that solar PV is probably the only new power source in Norway able to add capacity in the coming years. Wind, hydropower or nuclear require extensive legal and licensing frameworks and they have much longer build times compared to solar PV.
On the other hand, specific methods to retard the performance degradation of PV systems have been explored at both physical and chemical levels. These include surface cleaning , passivation layer repair , coating renewal and material regeneration techniques .
In real-world conditions, PV systems are often subject to additional environmental stressors, such as internal stress caused by thermal cycling, material fatigue and seal failure, all of which contribute to nonlinear degradation of the modules.
In a real-world environment, other factors such as moisture ingress, package ageing and hot-spot effects can still contribute to accelerated degradation of PV modules. Performance degradation over time can significantly impact the long-term economic efficiency of PV systems .
