Zinc-bromine flow batteries (ZBFBs) offer great potential for large-scale energy storage owing to the inherent high energy density and low cost. However, practical applications of this technology are hindered by low power density and short cycle life, mainly due to large polarization and non-uniform zinc deposition.
Last, we extended it to aqueous zinc-bromine and zinc-vanadium flow batteries of contemporary interest. It is again found that high power density (255 and 260 mW/cm 2, respectively) and high areal capacity (20 mA·hour/cm 2) can be simultaneously achieved in AZFBs.
In particular, zinc-bromine flow batteries (ZBFBs) have attracted considerable interest due to the high theoretical energy density of up to 440 Wh kg−1 and use of low-cost and abundant active materials [10, 11].
In the early stage of zinc–bromine batteries, electrodes were immersed in a non-flowing solution of zinc–bromide that was developed as a flowing electrolyte over time. Both the zinc–bromine static (non-flow) system and the flow system share the same electrochemistry, albeit with different features and limitations.
Herein for the first time, we have reported the performance and characteristics of new high-voltage zinc–vanadium (Zn–V) metal hybrid redox flow battery using a zinc bromide (ZnBr 2)-based electrolyte. The Zn–V system showed an open-circuit voltage of 1.85 V, which is very close to that of zinc–bromine flow cell.
Zinc–bromine flow batteries have shown promise in their long cycle life with minimal capacity fade, but no single battery type has met all the requirements for successful ESS implementation. Achieving a balance between the cost, lifetime and performance of ESSs can make them economically viable for different applications.
