Among the different ES technologies, compressed air energy storage (CAES) can store tens to hundreds of MW of power capacity for long-term applications and utility-scale. The increasing need for large-scale ES has led to the rising interest and development of CAES projects.
To overcome the problem of non-programmability of renewable sources, this study analyzes an energy storage system consisting of under water compressed air energy storage (UWCAES). A case study for fully power the Sicily region (Italy) with renewable energy source (wind and photovoltaic) is presented.
By 2012, with the Gaines, Texas, project (500 MW capacity) and other pilot programs, the idea of CAES as a large-scale, long-duration energy storage solution gained traction.
Current long-term energy storage is mainly provided by Pumped-Storage Hydroelectricity (PSH). Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) has appeared for decades as a credible alternative but its poor energy efficiency, the need of fossil fuels and the use of existing underground cavities as storage reservoirs have limited its development.
Moreover, CAES can deliver ancillary services, including black start capability, frequency regulation, and voltage support. In summary, CAES’s high capacity, extended duration, and comparatively favorable environmental profile distinguish it among large-scale energy storage solutions.
In UWCAES system, compressed air is usually stored in submerged expandable air accumulators, placed at or near the bed of lakes or oceans, in order to use the hydrostatic pressure resulting from the water column.
